Sector 1 is all the water surface area of Lake Don Pedro contained within the circle. A boat out of the Moccasin Marina is provided for the party covering Sector 1.
Sector 2 is the area along Marshes Flat road from its beginning at Hiway 49 all the way to the Mariposa County line. This sector has a small year-round creek fed by spring water along the road. Some development consisting of large acre ranches may require prior contact for permission to enter on the count day. Habitat is mostly oak woodlands and open grasslands. Depending on rainfall, some ranch ponds can be found along Marshes Flat road on the Mariposa County end. Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers have been found in these ponds.
Sector 3 is the 250-acre Groveland Community Services District property off Ferretti Rd in Groveland. This land is oak woodland and grassland and includes two aeration ponds of reasonable size. Barrow's Goldeneye and Redhead have been found in the large pond. Over 90 species have been identified throughout the year. This property can be covered in less than half the count day and will be combined with another sector for a single team.
Sector 4 is located in the northern portion of the circle. It includes Wards Ferry Rd, Deer Flat Rd, Corcoran Gray Rd, and Phelan Morgan Rd, on the North side of Hiway 120. This sector includes the large Crook Ranch which has a 2-acre pond deep inside the ranch. Prior arrangements must be made through Grant Crook to enter the ranch.
Sector 5 is primarily within the gated community of Pine Mountain Lake, and includes the ranch pond on Clinton Rd to the northeast of Pine Mountain Lake. The gated community portion contains the very large lake itself and an 18-hole golf course. To properly cover this mostly residential area a large team needs to be assembled. A boat is provided to cover the lake. Other teams covering Sector 5 should count all birds EXCEPT WATERFOWL ON THE LAKE AND ADJOINING PICNIC AREAS.
Sector 6 is defined by the area within a loop in the middle of the count circle made up of Priest-Coulterville Rd to Hiway J20 to Coulterville to Hiway 49 northwest to Hiway 120 and up Priest Grade to the start. It contains Priest Reservoir which requires coordination with Hetch Hetchy to enter, the Hetch Hetchy Catch Basin at Moccasin, and the Anker Ranch which also requires prior permission. The Smew was found in this sector at a ranch pond along Priest-Coulterville Rd during the 2007 count. The initial portion of the sector is heavily wooded, while the Hiway 49 portion is open grassland.
Sector 7 is in the Greeley Hill area and contained within an area bounded by Hiway J20 from the intersection of Priest-Coulterville Rd to Greeley Hill northwest on Converse Rd to Dexter Road to Cuneo Rd to Priest-Coulterville Rd. Only those birds found on the northeast side of Priest-Coulterville to J20 may be counted. Those birds on the southwest side belong to Sector 6. Habitat is heavy oak woodland.
Sector 8 consists of all the area south of Hiway 120 from Merrell Rd to Priest-Coulterville Rd. This includes all of Big Oak Flat, the cemetery along Hiway 120, and all the area to the south on Merrell Rd, Jackass Ridge Rd, and Harper Rd. Habitat is oak woodland. The Groveland landfill may produce some gulls.
Sector 9 in on the northeast side of the count circle and contains all the area outside of Pine Mountain Lake along both sides of Hiway 120 from downtown Groveland to Big Creek Shaft Rd. The loop formed by Old Hiway 120 is within this sector. The area is wooded with large acreage homes in most parts.
Sector 10 includes all the area along the southern portion of the count circle in Mariposa County. This includes both sides of Hiway 132 from Coulterville to Merced Falls Rd, including the Horseshoe Bend Recreational Area (possible Roadrunner),and all the residential areas to the north and northwest of Hiway 132, including Granite Springs Rd, Penon Blanco Rd, Arbolada Dr and all intersecting streets.
